How we work it out
Age and kilometres
We start from the car's original NZ price, apply typical depreciation for its age, then compare its odometer with the NZ average of about 14,000 km a year.
NZ New or import
NZ New cars usually hold a premium over used Japanese imports of the same model, because buyers value local history and specs.
Condition and paperwork
A current WOF and full service history make a car easier to sell. Visible damage or overdue maintenance pulls the price down.
Questions
Is the valuation free?
Yes. There's no sign-up and no cost.
Why is trade-in lower than private sale?
A dealer needs room to recondition, advertise and warranty the car, then make a margin. Selling privately takes more effort but usually gets you more.
How accurate is it?
It's an estimate based on typical market behaviour. Options, colour, accident history and local demand can move the real price in either direction.
Does the plate search use live NZTA data?
Not in this version. The plate search returns a sample vehicle so you can try the flow. A production site would connect to a licensed vehicle data provider.
